Family history
Ernst was the third child, and only son, of Franz Heinrich Carl Le Goullon and Matilda Pauline Wunderlich. His father was a merchant in Bremen, Germany, where Ernst was born.
Just over a year after his father's death, he left Germany to make his life in Australia. Ernst arrived in Sydney, Australia on 30 May 1912 on the Seydlitz from Bremen as a nearly 17 year old. He was not accompanied by any family members and must have been visiting his maternal uncles, Ernest, Otto and Alfred Wunderlich who were successful businessmen in Sydney by then. Eventually he was given a large collection of geological and fossil specimens by his uncle Ernest, reference of this is made in Ernest's memoir.
He spent some time in Sydney, but moved to Queensland where he worked on grazing properties. He was naturalised on 7 April 1923. In 1927 he purchased Borer Creek, a grazing property of about 10,000 acres about 45 miles north-east of Charleville which he sold 3 years later.
He married Mary Chancellor Irving in Sandgate on 4 May 1935 and together they had 3 children. They lived in Sandgate and he was a garage proprietor.
