George travelled from his home in Kent, England to Australia and arrived into Melbourne in 1905 together with his younger brother Frederick. George found his way to the goldfields area in around Kalgoorlie. He settled in Lawlers and followed his trade as a builder. He enlisted in 1916, by which time he was 50 years of age. On his enlistment forms he showed his aged as, initially 34 years 4 months, then changed to 43 years.
