Kay joined the army and their age group attended school at Yuronga in Brisbane for approximately 2 months. Kay was posted to Rocky Creek on the Atherton Tableland with the 2nd 2nd AGH for 3 years. It was a 600 bed hospital.
She then attended Backer Marsh Hospital in Darria, Victoria. Australia where POW's from Malaysia were stationed till they had beds for them at Hiddleburg. She was at Hollywood in Perth WA for 9 months and was discharged from the army at Greenslopes, Brisbane, Queensland.
She returned to Mareeba near Christmas and as not much was happening she decided to go nursing. Kay did a 4 year course at the Mater Hospital in Brisbane in 1947 and before she graduated she met Jim Williams at a wedding in September. When she finished in Brisbane she returned to Mareeba and got married at the Catholic church in 1951. They returned to Brisbane and lived with Jim's parents at Newfarm until their house was finished in October. Jim and Kay had 5 children.
