Corporal Archibald McDermaid (Service No:Q99187) enlisted in the Army on 2 June 1941 as a Private attached to Signals 5 Division. In February 1942 he transferred to 29 Infantry Brigade Signals Section and served in New Guinea (21 January 1943 - 28 May 1944) and Bougainville (3 December 1944 - 13 October 1945). He was promoted to Corporal on 10 August 1943 and was Discharged on 20 October 1945.

Born in 1910 in Brisbane QLD, Archibald was the eldest of three children of Archibald McDermaid Snr (b1879 in Ayrshire, Scotland) and Alice Maude Crutcher (b1883 in Surrey, England). Archibald Snr (a Labourer) and Alice (a Hospital Housemaid) married in London in 1907 and by 1910 were settled in Brisbane, QLD where Archibald Snr was a Carter, Labourer and Driver. Archibald Snr enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No:Q00937) and was Discharged as Medically Unfit.

Archibald was a Railway Porter in Brisbane when he enlisted in the Army, and in 1944 in Brisbane he married Helen Maude Bradford (b1912 at Tannymorel, QLD) - Helen was a Munitions Worker in Brisbane. Following his Discharge, Archibald and Helen settled in Brisbane where they raised their family and Archibald was a Railway Shunter. Archibald died in 1979 and Helen 2002.
