John Patrick McManus, born in Scotland in 1909, was the youngest child of Francis (Frank) McManus (born in Scotland in 1867) and Bridget Welsh (born in 1866 in Ireland). Both Frank and Bridget worked as Agricultural Labourers from the age of 14 years, and Frank became a Miner. John's parents emigrated to Australia in 1923, settling in Ipswich, QLD 

John was 14 years of age when he emigrated to QLD, where he lived and worked in Ipswich, QLD as a Baker's Labourer before enlisting in 1936. John enlisted and re-enlisted between 1936 and 1948 with the Armed Forces, ending his service in 1948 as a Warrant Officer II.

John's eldest half brother Daniel Welch - a Coal Miner - served in WWI with the AIF Tunneling Corps.

John married Aldyth Myrtle Geerth in 1930 in Ipswich, QLD and following the end of WWII, John and Aldyth lived in Yeronga, Brisbane, QLD where John continued with the Australian Army as a Soldier until his death in 1974
