Leonard was the youngest of six children of Leonard Valentine Muhling (born 1895 in Toowoomba, QLD) and Alice Beatrice Banks (born 1893 in Warwickshire, England). Leonard Snr - a Labourer - was serving in the AIF (Private, Service No:5082) when he married Alice in Birmingham, Warwickshire. Alice arrived at Crow's Nest on the Darling Downs in December 1918 and she and Leonard Snr lived on the Darling Downs, and in Rocklea, QLD where Leonard worked as a Labourer.
Leonard Jnr was a Labourer at Toogoolawah, QLD when he enlisted in the CMF inn April 1942. He served as a Private (Service No:Q128401) before enlisting with the AIF in September 1943. He served as a Private (Service No:QX58297) with 26th Battalion in Papua New Guinea (4 June 1943 - 3 July 1944) and at Bougainville (4 December 1944 - 2 May 1946). Len was Discharged in June 1946. Brother Raymond Valentine Muhling (Service No:QX51310) also served in WWII.
Following his Discharge, Len lived at Wulkaraka in Goodna, QLD, working as an Electrical Labourer. In 1951 he married Daphne Valma Molloy (born 1929 in Ipswich, QLD) in Ipswich, QLD. Len and Daphne settled at Booval in Ipswich, QLD where Len worked as an Electrical Linesman. He died in 1994 in Ipswich.
