Biography

William's mother was Isabella Walker (nee Stewart) and his father was David Walker.

William was living on Wirrawirra Staion near Forsayth, North Queensland at the time of enlistment.

He embarked with the 26th Infantry Battalion - 9th Reinforcements on 31 Jan 1916, aboard HMAT Wandilla, out of Brisbane.

William was promoted to Shoeing-smith in the Australian Army Service Corps on 13 Oct 1917 and soon after taken on strength of the 10th Field Artillery Brigade.

After discharge from service on 04 Apr 1919, William took up the profession of Butcher.

He is buried in the old Charleston Cemetery near Forsayth. The grave is marked by brass Commonweath plaque.

"Returned Soldier Missing.

The Commissioner of Police received a message from Normanton on Saturday reporting that Archie Walker, a returned soldier, had been reported as missing from Forsyth since April 18. The Forsyth and surrounding district police and trackers are searching for the missing man." - from the Brisbane Courier 26 Apr 1920 (nla.gov.au)

"Returned Soldier's Death.

Archie Walker a returned soldier, was reported missing from Forsyth, Normanton police district on April 18. It was then stated that he was subject to fits, and that police and trackers were searching for him. A message has now been received by the Commissioner of Police stating that the remains of Walker had been found at the top of the range two miles from Forsayth. They were decomposed beyond recognition but were identified by the clothes. There were no suspicious circumstances." - from the Brisbane Courier 07 May 1920 (nla.gov.au)

"REMAINS FOUND.
