Leslie was the second of six children of Joseph Arthur Richards (born 1888 in Gympie, QLD) and Isabella Jane Flannigan (born 1889 in Ipswich, QLD). Joseph - a Coal Miner in Ipswich, QLD - and Isabella married in 1912 in Ipswich, QLD where they settled and raised their family.

Les was working at Kalbar in Boonah, QLD as a Farm Hand in 1941 when he enlisted in the ACMF as a Private (Service No:Q60301) with 19 Australian Field Ambulance AASC. On 5 December 1942, he transferred to the AIF as Lance Sergeant (Service No: QX44859). He served at Merauke and was Discharged in December 1944. Brother Arnold (Private; Service No:Q13921) also served in WWII.

In 1943, Les married Brenda Nerenda Carreno Jackson (born 1918 in Ipswich, QLD) - Brenda was a Clerk. Les and Brenda settled in Ipswich, QLD where Les worked as a Coal Miner. Brenda died in 1987 and Les in 1982.
