Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Private Kenneth Samuel Eales (Service No:6495) enlisted in the AIF on 28 July 1916 and was attached to 7th Infantry Battalion when he embarked from Melbourne with his Unit on 2 October 1916 bound for Plymouth on board HMAT A71 Nestor. Private Eales served on the Western Front and was attached to 38th Infantry Battalion when he embarked from Devonport for Melbourne on board HT Soudan on 12 May 1919. Private Eales was attached to 38th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 6 August 1919. Ken later served in WWII - his brother Garnet Eales DCM, served in WWI and nephew Ronald served in WWII.

Ken was born in Penshurst via Hamilton, Victoria in 1898, youngest of four children of Samuel Eales (b1860 in Penshurst, Victoria) and his second wife Jane Stevenson (b1867 in Cavendish, Victoria). Samuel (a Widower with a young son) was a Butcher when he and Jane married in 1888 in Penshurst. They lived in Penshurst and Hamilton, where they raised their family and Samuel was a Butcher and Labourer - and member from 1879 of the Oddfellows (MUIOOF) Penshurst.

Ken worked as a Station Hand in Penshurst before enlisting in the AIF. He returned to Hamilton following his Discharge and worked again as a Station Hand. In 1921 he married Florence (Dolly) Fort (b1898 in Hamilton, Victoria) and they settled in Hamilton where they raised their family and Ken worked as a Station Hand, Driver and Linesman. Ken served in WWII and post-war, worked in Hamilton as a Public Servant. Ken died in 1982 and Dolly in 1986.
