Mick was the fourth child of Albert Roy Achilles Stapleton (b1898 in Charters Towers, QLD) and Lucy Emily Boyce (b1900 in Ipswich, LD). Albert (a Letter Carrier) and Lucy married in 1921 in Brisbane, QLD. Albert served with the AIF (Service No:7054) in WWI and was awarded the Military Medal in 1918 for his actions at the Somme. Albert's brother Augustine also served in WWI.

Mick was a Stockman at Dart's Creek in Ambrose via Gladstone QLD when he enlisted in the ACMF in 1941. He was a Sapper and Driver (Service No:Q6298) with 5th (Light Horse) Motor Regiment and was attached to 20 Field Artillery Coy RAE in August 1943 when he enlisted in the AIF. Mick served with 20 Field Coy RAE and 13 Army Troops Coy (Sapper, Driver; Service No:QX56830) in New Guinea (7 October 1943 - 9 April 1945 and 3 June 1945 - 8 February 1947). Mick was Discharged on 17 February 1947. Mick's father and Uncle, and two brothers also served in WWII.

Mick married twice - to Jean Anderson in 1947 and Valma Mae in the 1950s. He lived in Tailem Bend, SA in the early 1950s, and was a Milk Vendor in Broken Hill, NSW in the late 1950s. Mick moved to Adelaide in the mid 1960's where he died in 1974.
