Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery.

On the 7th June 1917, Private Joseph McDougall, 33rd Battalion (Reg No-2197), coal miner from Main Street, Catherine Hill Bay, New South Wales, father of five or six (Rosenia or Rosina, born 1914, Catherine Hill Bay, N.S.W., Joyce Salisbury, born 31.1.1917, Adamstown, N.S.W., John Peter Bassett, step-son, born 1906, Catherine Hill Bay, N.S.W., Jane Ann Bassett, step-daughter, born 1909, Catherine Hill Bay, N.S.W., Cecil Thomas Bassett, step-son, born 27.6.1911, Catherine Hill Bay, N.S.W., died 15.10.1916, Newcastle Hospital, age 5 years, sleeping at Sandgate Cemetery, ANGLICAN 1-72.3 and Jackie?), was Killed in Action during the Battle of Messines, age 30. Cause of death unknown.

No Australian Red Cross Wounded and Missing File.

Street, Catherine Hill Bay, New South Wales, and Mary Rebecca McDougall nee North (died 11.4.1938, Wallsend Hospital, age 65, mother of 12? or 13?), from Main Street (Middle Camp?) and Nairn? Street, Catherine Hill Bay, New South Wales and Henry Street, South Cardiff, N.S.W.; husband of Sarah Ann McDougall nee Parsons (married 1914, Catherine Hill Bay, N.S.W., remarried?, died?), from Thomas Street, Adamstown, New South Wales and "Messines", King Street, Adamstown, N.S.W. and Buxton Street and Bailey Street and Brunker Road, Adamstown, N.S.W., Joe enlisted on the 29th April 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A68 Anchises on the 24th August 1916.

Joe is resting at Toronto Avenue Cemetery, Belgium. Row C Grave 8.

Mr. McDougall’s name has been inscribed on the Dudley Public School Roll of Honor, Catherine Hill Bay War Memorial, Catherine Hill Bay Roll of Honour and the Catherine Hill Bay Cornstalk Lodge G.U.O.F.G. Roll of Honour.

Unfortunately, there is no headstone at the McDougall gravesite, therefore no memorial inscription to tell us of the loss of their son during The Great War, so November 2016 I erected a Memorial cross adorned with poppies in remembrance of Joe’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. Younger brother Archibald McDougall (Arch, born 19.5.1895, Dudley, N.S.W., miner from Catherine Hill Bay, New South Wales and Fourth Street, Cardiff South, N.S.W. (1953) and Henry Street, South Cardiff, N.S.W., enlisted 4.9.1915, 20th Battalion, Reg No-3849, wounded 4 times, RTA invalided 5.3.1919, died 15.2.1973, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 77, not officially commemorated.

Younger brother John William McDougall (Jack, born 11.10.1891?, Young Wallsend, N.S.W.?, married miner from Catherine Hill Bay, New South Wales, enlisted 13.5.1916, 33rd Battalion, Reg No-2169, RTA 28.6.1919, died 17.4.1965?, age 73, not officially commemorated.

Younger brother George McDougall (born 2.12.1896, Adamstown, N.S.W., miner from Catherine Hill Bay, New South Wales, enlisted 13.5.1916, 33rd Battalion, Reg No-2170, wounded twice, RTA 10.8.1919, died 7.1.1974, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 77, not officially commemorated.

Older brother William Munro McDougall Jnr (born 1886?, Minmi, N.S.W.?, miner from Catherine Hill Bay, New South Wales, enlisted 27.7.1915, 18th Battalion, Reg No-2739, RTA 19.9.1919 with Scottish wife Jane Pettigrew (married 5.3.1919 at 82 Hospital Street, Glasgow, Scotland), 1st Australian Light Trench Mortar Battery, died 3.5.1939, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 53, not officially commemorated.
