Robert was the eldest of 3 children of Robert Swallow (born in New Zealand) and Charlotte Maud Crisford (born in Sydney, New South Wales). Robert was born in Hurstville, Sydney, New South Wales and by 1914 the family had moved to Englesberg, Boonah in Queensland where Robert Snr was a Farmer.

Robert, 19 years of age in 1924,  was Labourer when he married Elizabeth Esther Kaden in Boonah, QLD. The family moved to Brisbane, QLD, where Robert was a Labourer when he enlisted in the Australian Army in 1941. Following his Discharge in 1945, Robert continued to live in Brisbane, QLD and worked as a Labourer until his death in 1956
