Bill enlisted for overseas service on the 6th of May 1916, and after basic training left for overseas on the 30th of October 1916 on the troopship "Port Lincoln" arriving in England just after Christmas. On the 29th of December the troops were marched to the AIF military training camp at Perham Downs, and it was here that Bill was selected to train with the 4th Division Machine Gun Company. On the 7th of September 1917 the 4th Division was sent to France and almost immediately sent to the front line. Bill was involved in bloody skirmishes at Hindenburg, Messines, Ypres, Menin Road, Polygon Wood, The Butte, Passchendaele, Hebuterne, Villers-Bretonneux and Vill Sur Ancre near Morgancourt Amiens, Le Verguir and Hargincourt.
On May the 24th 1918, Bill was promoted to Lance Corporal and he received his 2nd stripe to Corporal on June 20th 1918. During these battles he was injured many times and spent time in The First Southern General Hospital, the Convalescent Depot at Cannes, The First General Hospital in France, The Alexandria Hospital at Gosham and finally the Military Hospital at Cardiff. Eventually Bill was discharged from the AIF on September the 26th 1919. He had served a total of 3 years and 144 days in service, of which 2 years and 304 days were overseas. Bill returned home to the Atherton Tablelands to Tarzali where he married and had 5 daughters. Bill passed away in Atherton aged 80 years of age and is buried in the Atherton Cemetery.
