From: In Remembrance: Hungerford and Associated Families in the Great War 1914-1918

In the Boer War he was a Lt in the NSW Lancers, later was a Capt with the 30th Bn Imperial Yeomanry.

In WWI he was a Commissioned Officer in the  Sea Transport Service

Captain Allan enlisted three times. He only appears to have made two trips out to Egypt, and return voyages, 'Voyage only'. He was on duty on the return voyages as well.

Campaigns Served:   World War I Sea Transport Service. He had also served in the Boer War.

Enlistment (1) on 14 November 1914, Liverpool, NSW; No further details given.
Enlistment (2) on 2 March 1916, possibly on HMAT A13 Katuna; Embarked from Melbourne, Vic., 9 March 1916 on board HMAT A13 Katuna, Officer in Charge of Troops, via Sydney to Suez. Return to Australia: Transport Officer on duty; Left Suez, Egypt, 29 April 1916 on board HMAT A48 Seang Bee. On duty, arriving Melbourne 31 May 1916. Appointment terminated on 3 June 1916.
Enlistment (3) on 29 September 1916, Sydney. Appointed Captain & Officer in Charge of Troops, for voyage only, on 17 October 1916. Embarked 23 November 1916 on HMAT A13 Katuna, from Sydney, 'voyage only', Officer in Charge of Troops, and Remount Officer (in charge of horses), on duty. Return to Australia: On 22(?) January 1917 on board HMAT A14 Euripides, from Suez, Egypt, on duty as Veterinary Officer, arriving Melbourne, Vic., 21 February 1917, and was discharged on that date.
Fate:   Before the war he had been living in England. He married (1) Elsie Crawford Wilson, 10 June 1885, Maidenhead, England. She did not come to Australia, and died 10 October 1939, England. He married (2) Hettie Gertrude Rebecca Middleton (nee Patey), 1 November 1939, The District Registrar's Office, Paddington, NSW.
