Andrew Aytoun was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on 2 Jul 1860. He was a commissioned officer in the British Army and came to Queensland in 1888 as a Infantry Staff Officer. He married Helen Lilias Graham on 3 Apr 1889 in Brisbane. Their son and only child, Robert Merlin Graham Aytoun, was born on 19 Jan 1890 in Brisbane (Lieut. Robert Aytoun, British Army, died from wounds in WW1 France on 27 Aug 1914).
He served as a Lieutenant-Colonel with the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen in the South African (Boer) War embarking 18 May 1900 and arriving in South Africa 14 Jun 1900, he was invalided and embarked to return to Australia on 19 Nov 1900 arriving Dec 1900. He was appointed a DSO in 1901. His commission with the Queensland Defence Force ended at the end of 1902 and he returned to England in Jan 1903 and settling in Stirling, Scotland.
