Both Thomas and his brother Samuel had been kangaroo shooting in Central Queensland at the time war in South Africa had been declared. They both offered their services by telegram and when accepted they travelled to Sydney, where they arrived two days prior to the Regiments departure for South Africa.
Thomas had received his military training with the Molong Company of the Foot Infantry and then joined the Mounted Rifles.
On the official records Thomas is listed as being born in 1867 at Harley NSW, his occupation on enlistment was recorded as farmer.
Samuel was invalided to Australia arriving on the 14th July 1900, this was due to being shot through the foot at Paardeburg.
Received Gold Tribute Medal from Citizens of Molong for Valour.
“The Town Council had also agreed to entertain the men at a ceremony on 28 January, where each would be presented with a gold medal, suitably inscribed".
