BOER WAR VETERAN
BURNED TO DEATH
WALTER BARNARD (73), a veteran of the Boer War, was burned to death in his weatherboard home at Sorell about 1 a.m yesterday. The body, of Barnard, who lived alone, was reduced to ashes. Cause of the fire is not known. Mr. R. Featherstone, a neighbour, who was the first to notice the fire, attempted a rescue but was driven back by the intense heat. Tpr. R. J. Chilcott, of Sorell, who made inquiries on behalf of the police department, has furnished a report on the fire to the Sorell Coroner (Mr. D. Gatehouse). Since the death of his wife some years ago Mr. Barnard had lived alone. He was the only surviving son of the late Arthur Barnard, who died last year at the age of 94. Two of Walter Barnard's brothers lost their lives in the First World War.
