They had a little girl not long after marrying, Violet Grace Bartley, but sadly she died the same year (Source: QLD BDM: 1897 B60857 Violet Grace Bartley Herbert Wilfred Clarice May Uren).
The next year another daughter, Clarice Ivy Bartley was born (Source: QLD BDM:
1898 B63254 Clarice Ivy Bartley Herbert Wilfred Clarite Ida May Uren).
He signed up for the Boer War and joined the Third Queensland Contingent to South Africa. Returning to Australia with the "A Squadron" of the Third Qld Contingent in 1901, he struggled to settle back into civilian life.
On Tuesday the 18th June 1901, Herbert 'threw himself' off the cliff above Petrie's Bight - despondent with life.
"All Is Vanity RETURNED SOLDIER'S VIEW. BRISBANE, Noon.
Herbert Bartley, a member of the Third Queensland Contingent, who recently
returned from South Africa, was found at the foot of a cliff at- Petrie's Bight, Brisbane, yesterday, suffering from serious injuries. The cliff is 50ft.
high. Bartley stated that he threw himself over on Saturday because he wanted

The last record found was the 1913 Electoral Role, which had Herbert Wilfred Bartley now living on his own in Townsville, at "Dave Rappit's, Denham-street' working as a labourer.

Herbert Wilfred Bartley was born in Queensland on 8 Jul 1872, a son to James Bartley and Mary Ann Bartley (nee Walker). He married Clarice Ida May Uren on 2 Feb 1897 and at the time of his enlistment in the 3rd Queensland Mounted Infantry they were living at New Farm in Brisbane, Qld.
He has been recorded in the Australian Boer War Memorial database with a Bio submitted by his second cousin. The Bio notes he also served a second time in the South African (Boer) War as a Trooper in the 5th Batallion Australian Commonwelth Horse, New South Wales. However, the AWM Boer War Nominal Roll, Murray, p. 189 and the Virtual War Memorial note this serviceman as S.N. 147 Herbert Wilford Bartley.
