Arthur Clarence Bassmann (Bassman) was born on 25 Jun 1867 at Grafton, New South Wales, a son to Henry Heinrich Bassmann and Christina Johanna Bassmann (nee Jackschon).

He served twice in the South African (Boer) war. First service was as a Private S.N. 251 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen. Second service was as a Private (Shoeing Smith) rising to Farrier-Sergeant S.N. 404 in the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen.
