Private James Bryce served in the Boer War during which time James served in South Africa with two units - 3rd Contingent Queensland Mounted Infantry (Private No. 199) & 7th Battalion Australian Commonwealth Horse (Private No. 29). James left Brisbane on 1 March, 1900 and returned to Brisbane on 2 August, 1902. James' Queen's South Africa Medal is displayed in the Maryborough Military & Colonial Museum.
