John Walter Maxwell Carrol was born ca. 1864 in Rome, Italy. Prior to arriving in Australia he had served for two years as Her Majesty's Commissioner in West Africa. He served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1.

His first service was as a Captain=Adjutant with the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. His service was interrupted by illness due to malaria returning to Australia aboard the Orient arriving Brisbane 16 Jan 1901 to convalesce, returning to service on 14 Feb 1901. On his return to Autralia after completion of service he remained n the Queensland permanent staff.

In 1917 while living at Ivanhoe, victoria, he enlisted for WW1 serving as a Major in the 4th Battalion (Sea Transport Service) AIF. In Jan 1918 while serving in France he was taken ill resulting in debility and his return to Australia for discharge. At the time of his enlistment he noted he was living at 'Marylands' at Ivanhoe in Victoria and he was married to Maud Rees Maxwell Carroll.
