Herbert Edward Crisp was born in London, England about 1872, emigrating at the age of 16 to Queensland where he later acquired a pastoral property. He served twice in the South African (Boer) War and also in WW1.
His first service was as a Private rising to Sergeant S.N. 139 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. On return from his service he made his way to settle in NSW where he was residing at the time of his second service as a Sergeant in the 5th Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse, Boer War. This was to be a short service as peace had been declared prior to the unit arriving in South Africa. He returned to the area around Casino in NSW, working on properties in the Richmond River district.
His third service was as a Private S.N. 3029 in the 2nd Light Horse Regiment WW1. Following his service he returned to the NSW Richmond River district obtaining land under the Returned Soldiers Act at Back Creek. He later relocated to Casino where he worked in various clerical positions and was an active member of the Returned Soldiers' League.
