Death of Mr. J. J. J. Cullen
Death yesterday claimed Mr. John James Joseph Cullen, retired Customs officer, of 66 Wright-street, Highgate, at the age of 59. Deceased, who had been In the service of the Customs Department for a great many years-the last 25 in this State-recently retired owing to ill health. He was a keen follower of Australian football, and was a life member of the  Perth Football Club. A widow and grown-up son and daughter survive him.

The death occurred on Saturday last of Mr. John James Joseph Cullen, of 66 Wright-street, Highgate Hill, a retired Customs officer and a life honorary member of the West Perth  Football Club. Born in Adelaide in 1873.  Mr. Cullen was educated at the Christian Brothers College there. He early manifested a love for sport and during his college days was  champion inter-collegiate swimmer. After leaving college, he became champion swimmer of South Australia. In 1894 he represented Adelaide in the football matches against the  Essendon team during their tour. Coming to this State he joined the Customs Department in Fremantle. He played with the old Fremantle football team and, subsequently being  transferred to Perth, got his clearance to the West Perth Football Club with which he was connected from 1896 up to the time of his death. He went to South Africa for the Boer  War with the First West Australian Contingent and on his return worked in the Customs Office in. Geraldton. During later years he was attached to the Customs Department in  Perth until failing eyesight compelled him to retire two years ago. Honourable in his dealings with his fellow man, Mr. Cullen carried the respect of a large circle of friends, whose  sympathy is extended to his widow, daughter and son in their bereavement.
The cortege moved from Bowra and, O'Dea's private mortuary, 195 Pier-street, Perth, on Monday morning last, travelling by road to the Roman Catholic cemetery, Karrakatta, where the Rev. Father Doyle recited the closing prayers.
