Hurtle Edwin De MESTRE was born in Nowra, New South Wales on 23rd October, 1881

His parents were Etienne Livingstone De MESTRE and Clara Eliza ROWE who married on 27th December, 1873 in St Matthias Church , Paddington, Sydney

He enlisted with the NSW Citizens Bushmen who embarked from Sydney on 28th February, 1900 & they were combined with other units in South Africa to form the 3rd NSW Imperial Bushmen

He served in the Boer War with the 3rd NSW Imperial Bushmen & rose through the ranks from Corporal to Lieutenant - promoted to Sergeant 26.3.1901

After the war he managed a leading stud in South Africa

He died of Illness at Springfield Lodge, South Africa, late of Kromdraal Lodge, Standerston District, South Africa on 25th October, 1922
