A Boer War Veteran and a WW1 Officer
George Archibald Cowan Dods, born 9 October 1871 at Kirk Yetholm, Scotland, began his service with the military during the Anglo-Boer War, as a rank and file member of the 3rd Queensland Contingent. He served 17 February 1900 to 20 June 1901.
He was the son of Dr James Dods and his wife Catherine (nee Cowan). Dr Dods was one of the medical doctors at the B.A.F.S Medical Institute, Roma Villa, Upper Roma Street, Brisbane.
He went on to serving as an Officer in the military, had a break as a Fruit Grower and Farmer, then rejoined in 1917 and saw service in France - where he received a gunshot wound to the leg. He survived the war and returned to Australia, where he and his wife Bessie, settled at Urangan.
He died 6 June 1942 in Urangan, Queensland ("Family Notices" The Courier-Mail (Brisbane, Qld.) 13 June 1942) and was buried on 8 June 1942 in Maryborough Cemetery (Section: Monumental K; Plot/Niche: 669/13).

His first service was as a Private (rising to Corporal) S.N. 6 in the 3rd Queensland Mounted Infantry, Boer War. Second service was as a Lieutenant in the 7th Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse, Boer War. He served in WW1 as a Lieutenant in the 4th Pioneer Battalion, AIF.
He was born in 1871 in Scotland emigrating to Australia with his family headed by his father James Dods. He married Bessie Ida Hellicar Alexander on 7 Jun 1906 in Queensland, Australia.
