Capt. Herbert Rowland Pasley Durham was born Hubert Rowland Pasley Durham on 10 December 1854 at Llanddewi-Aberarth, Cardiganshire, Wales. It is unknown when he came to Queensland but had married Mary Ann Morse on 20 Apr 1887 in Queensland and was serving as a police officer in Brisbane when he joined the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen in 1900 to serve in the Boer War. 

Upon his return from the war he was again employed as a police officer and was serving as a Sub-Inspector at Hughenden, Qld when on 25 Nov 1906 it was determined he died from a self inflicted gunshot.
