Captain R. B. Echlin,
Boer War Veteran,
Dies at Age of 88
Captain Richard Boyd Echlin. who died on Saturday night, was well known in military circles in Queensland, as he was well known amongst pioneer pastorahsts when as a young man he followed glazing pursuits in the Mitchell district and on the  Diamantina. He was second in command of the Second Contingent which left here for South Africa during the Boer War. The late Captain Echlin was born at Downpatrick. County Down, 88 years ago. He came out here as a young man and gained pastoral experience in the districts mentioned. Afterwards he entered the permanent military forces. He also was a prominent polo player. He remained for some years in South Africa after the war was over, but returning to Queensland he lived quietly here.
Mrs. Echlin. who is a sister of Mr. John Warren White, of Tamborine survives her husband, as also do two daughters—Mrs. E. A. Feldt, of New Guinea, and Miss Daisy Echlin, of Brisbane— and one son— Major R. F. W. Echlin late of The Grenadier Guards, who is living in retirement in Surrey England. The funeral, which takes place this afternoon, will be of a private nature.
