Arthur Reginald Excel (Excell) served twice in the South African (Boer) War, first as a Private (rising in rank to Staff Sergeant) S.N. 231 in the 3rd Queensland Mounted Infantry, and transfered in South Africa for second service as a Lieutenant in the 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen (source AWM Boer War Nominal Roll p. 472 & 510).
