OBITUARY
News has been received in Melbourne of the death of Sergeant-Major James Fawns, R.A.A., at Thursday Island, on Friday last. Deceased was a native of Bendigo (son of the late Mr. James, brewer, of High street), and was for some time employed on a station in Queensland. Returning to Victoria, he joined tho Field Artillery, and subsequently the Permanent Garrison Artillery. He served in tho South African war. He was under fire on several occasions, and was awarded a medal with clasps. About five years ago Sergeant-Major Fawns was sent to South Australia, being stationed at the Largs fort, and twelve months ago he went to Thursday lsland.
