James William Goodes, second son of James Goodes and Emily (nee Robinson), was born in Belalie, near Jamestown, South Australia, on 12 August 1872. He enlisted with the Australian armed forces in Jamestown, and served in the South African Boer War, No.257, Trooper, with the 5th South Australian Imperial Bushmen. He sailed on board the 'Ormazan' on 9 February 1901, and served in the Free State including the defence of Graspan and the charge at Grootvlei. He was awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal with Orange Free State, SA 1901 and SA 1902 clasps. On 27 June 1906 he married Eleanor Ada Shellen (or Chellew) at the Methodist Church in Jamestown. They had four children: Rita Hazel b.1906, Eleanor Wilmot b.1908, Rena Emily b.1910, and James William b.1915. Will Goodes died on 23 August 1954 in Belalie East, South Australia, aged 82 years.
