James Goodwin served twice in the South African (Boer) War. First service as a Private S.N. 68 in the 3rd Queensland Mounted Infantry, second service as a Private S.N. 820 in the 1st Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse.

He was born in 1876 in the Wellingrve District near Glen Innes, NSW, a sone to James and Catherine Goodwin.
