John Hay Grieve was born around 1875 at Londonderry, Ireland, a son to John Hay and Mary Hay (nee Crawford). He emigrated at the age of 10 with his parents and 3 brothers to Queensland where his parents selected a grazing property 'Ettricdale' at Kilkivan.
Following his service in the South African (Boer) War he returned to Burnett area pusuing farming and grazing activities on several properties in the surrounding areas. He married Anastasia Jane Millar on 16 Jan 1908 and they had 6 children.
