Henry George Harris was born on 2 Apr 1875 in Brisbane, a son to George Harris and Brunetta Louisa Harris (nee Smith). He married Wilhelmine Louise Petersen on 29 Jan 1896 in Queensland. When he enlisted in 1918 for WW1 he was living with his wife in Launceston, Tasmania and gave his occupation as Soldier. His wife died in Tasmania in 1939.

He served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1.First service was as a Company Sergeant Major S.N. 3 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. Second service was as Lieutenant in the 1st to 3rd (WA) and (TAS) Reinforcements (May-Oct 1918) embarking from Sydney 9 Oct 1919 disembarking in London 12 Dec 1919. He was subject of a Court Martial proceeding 30 Jan 1920 for fraudulently disposing of supplies and was found guilty with the sentence of dismissal from the service and return to Australia under escort.
