Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Edward William Henderson appears to be a little unique in tht he served three times with different units in the South African (Boer) War.

He first served as a Private S.N. 53 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen. However a couple of months after arriving in South Africa he was invalided due to Enteric Fever and returned to Australia where he was discharged 30 Sep 1900.

He then re-enlisted/transfered for his second service (under the same service number) embarking on 6 Mar 1901 as a Private S.N. 53  in the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen. He saw out the full service with this unit returning to Australia where unit was disbanded 5 May 1902.

Obviously not deterred by the amount of time spent in cramped conditions on ships he again, a few days after his return from his second service, embarked on 19 May 1902 for his third service as a Private S.N. 398 in the 7th Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse. On arriving in South Africa on 22 Jun 1902 they found peace had already been declared and on 28 Jun 1902 they were again back on a ship embarking to return to Australia, each trip between Australia and South Africa taking basically a month by ship. Unfortunately his photo for his third service published in The Queenslander, 31 May 1902, p. 1195, along with all others on that page, is indiscernable in the digitised scan on Trove.
