It appears that John Smith Henzeel has been incorrectly recorded by surname on the AWM Boer War Nominal Roll, Murray p. 496. Boer War Service paybooks for the 5th Qld Imperial Bushmen held by the Qld State Archives indicate his surname to be Henzell. He requested part of his Boer War service pay to be directed to his sister Ms A. B. (Ada Bertha) Henzell.
It appears he also enlisted and served again in WW1 under the name John Smith Henzell serving as a Private S.N. 1720 in the 4th Light Horse Field Ambulance. His WW1 enlistment attestation paper notes his previous Boer War service in the 5th Qld Contingent, that he was single and 40 years old, born in Stanthorpe, and his N.O.K. was his father Thomas Smith Henzell.
