Robert Arthur Herd served twice in the South African (Boer) War. with his name listed as Robert Alfred Herd on his second service. First service was as a Private S.N. 45 in the 3rd Queensland Mounted Infantry. His second service was as a Private S.N. 401 in the 7th Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse. In the Boer War Dossier held by National Archives Australia for his second service his attestation paper notes he had previously served in the 3rd QIB (QMI), the only Herd to serve in the 3rd QMI was Robert Arthur Herd.
Robert Arthur Herd was born in Queensland on 25 Jul 1879, a son to John Herd and Charlotte Herd (nee Pritchard).
