Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Cecil Somerville Hetherington was born in 1879 in Gladstone, a son to Alexander Hetherington and Edith Mary Hetherington (nee Fairfax). It appears that he served twice in the South African (Boer) War. First service as a Private S.N. 349 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen. Second service was with a South African force raised by Major F Von Steinaecker known as Steinaecker's Horse in which he served as a Trooper in the Special Squadron joining in Durban on 31 Jan 1902 and discharging at Pretoria on 15 Jul 1902.

After returning to Australia he married Margaret Shealds Jack on 9 Jul 1915 in Queensland.
