BOER WAR VETERAN
BALLINA, Friday.
Mr. Ernest Fairhall Hopkinson, a well known resident of the Richmond River district, died at Ballina, this morning. Deceased had been in ill health for some time, and recently collapsed in Lismore, an attack from which he did not recover. He was born in England 57 years ago and came to Australia with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. W. H. ( "Harry" ) Hopkinson, when an infant. After residing in various parts of the State for some years, the family moved to Lismore about 45 years ago, and later moved to the Wardell district. While at Wardell deceased enlisted in the N.S.W. Lancers for the Boer War, during which he was wounded, invalided to England, and returned to the firing line. He gained his commission on the field, being discharged with the rank of lieutenant.
After the Boer War the late Mr. Hopkinson was engaged for some time in commercial pursuits in the Far East, and on returning to Australia settled on a property at Bonalbo. Here he married Miss Bessie Baird, and later conducted an auctioneering business at Mallanganee, removing to Ballina some ten years ago.
IN PUBLIC LIFE
Deceased, until his health failed, was very active in public affairs, having been president of Ballina. Chamber of Commerce, and president of the North Coast and Tablelands Associated Chambers. He had also served as an alderman of Ballina Council. A widow, one son, Boss, and one daughter, Lois, survive, in addition to one brother (Capt. Harold Hopkinson, Mackay, Q.), and two sisters, Mrs. Maher (Tuggerah) and Mrs. W. Mallett (Wardell). The funeral will leave St. Mary's Church of England, Ballina on Saturday at noon for the Church of England portion of East Ballina cemetery.
