Benjamin Hore served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1, first as a Private S.N. 246 in the 3rd Queensland Mounted Infantry, and second as a Private S.N. 3180 in the 5th Light Horse Regiment AIF WW1 (source AWM Boer War Nominal Roll, Murray p. 472; National Archives Australia WW 1 service record).
His granddaughter, Margret Rittway, from Toowoomba, placed the following Bio to her grandfather on the Australian Boer War Memorial ancestor database.
Born in England, he began his training to be an officer in the Merchant Navy when he left the ship in Melbourne and found his way to Torrens Creek, North Queensland. He enlisted with the Bushmen's Contingent of 26 men at Charters Towers before travelling by train to Townsville and thence via the 'SS Barcoo' to Brisbane. After 28 days in camp collecting his gear, visiting the rifle range at Toowong and being sworn in for service in South Africa, he left Brisbane on the 'SS Duke of Portland" on 1/3/1900.
My grandfather's first port of call was Cape Town then into Rhodesia via the port of Beira in Portuguese East Africa. He spent most of his service in Rhodesia and gradually came south through Bechuanaland, Transvaal, Orange Free State and Cape Colony; leaving Cape Town on the 9th May 1901 for Australia on the 'SS Morayshire'.
Ben Hore returned to Torrens Creek and continued kangaroo shooting until he married Florence Frances Quirke 24/12/1902 in Hughenden. They had five sons, Benjamin, Alfred, William, Herbert and Thomas. Ben senior served in the 5th Light Horse (25th Reinforcement) in WW1 in Egypt and Palestine. After returning from that war on 5 March 1919, Ben became a 'soldier settler' in the Torrens Creek district.
