Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey
Richard Ireton was born on 10 May 1874 in County Cavan, Ireland, a son to David Ireton and Jane Ireton (nee Livingstone). His family emigrated to Australia arriving in Brisbane in 1886 when he was about 12 years old.
When he enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as Mr. F. Ireton, Toowong. At the time he enlisted he was living in Charters Towers, and his elderly mother was residing at the Benevolent Home, Dunwich, so it appears he noted his brother Frederick as his N.O.K.
Following his return from the South African (Boer) War he again resided at Charters Towers where he ran a horse drawn bus line. He first married Emily Huxley Wright on 28 Mar 1904 in Queensland and they had 2 children before Emily passed in 1908. He then married Eliza Quinn on 16 Oct 1913 in Queensland and they had 4 further children.
He relocated the family to Townsville around 1917 where he was engaged in the cab and motor taxi trades.
