"Your recent mention of Captain Howland, who was in charge of South Australia's first contingent to the Boer War, interested friends of mine here, particularly Mr. Thomas Jenkinson, who served under Captain Howland in the South African campaign. Although his birth certificate shows he was born in 1880 Thomas claimed to be born in 1878 but had actually put his age up to enlist.
