41 Years As
Councillor
Mr. A. P. Johnson, who has been Warden of Green Ponds Municipality on 19 occasions during his 41 years as a councillor, did not seek re-election as Warden at the annual council meeting.
Mr. Johnson is one of the oldest councillors in Tasmania. A Boer War veteran, he was elected in 1909, and has been associated with public affairs in the Kempton district since this entry to the council.
At 80 He Puts His Job First
An original of local government in Tasmania. Mr. A. F. Johnson, of Kempton, returned from a fishing trip at Lake Leake yesterday to attend a meeting of the Green Ponds Council on the anniversary of his 80th birthday.
Mr. Johnson, who is a Boer War veteran, a regular rifle shooter, and a keen angler, joined the Green Ponds Council in 1907, when the first election was held under the Local Government Act. In the intervening 47 years, he has given service to the municipality as warden, treasurer, deputy warden, justice of the peace, and a member of the District Licensing Court. At present, he is Deputy Warden. At the council meeting yesterday, the Warden (Mr. B. H. Bisdee), expressed congratulations on behalf of the council. Later, Mr. Johnson received more congratulations when members of the council were entertained to afternoon tea by the Kempton Red Cross branch.
