Biography

Promoted Lieutenant 21 March 1900. Previously attached to Victorian Forces as commissioned officer.

Sergeant-Major Johnston was. appointed Lieutenant in the First Contingent from South Australia and took the place of the late Lieutenant J. W.

Powell, who was killed at Rensburg. 

Lieutenant Johnston served as a Lieutenant in the Victorian infantry for six years, and as Lieutenant in the artilllery for two years. He holds the Royai Humane Society's medal and clasp for gallantry in saving life, and was successful in the military examination for commission in the Victorian Permanent Artillery.

When he was not selected as one of the Subalterns in the First Victorian Contingent, he enlisted as a private in the South Australian InfantryContingent.

His knowledge of drill soon caused him to be conspicuous amongst our men, and lie was made a Corporal and then a Sergeant. He was Senior Sergeant when the troopship Medic went away, and when the colonial troops were formed into a regiment he was given the rank of a warrant officer as Regimental Sergeant-Major.
