Alexander Wynyard-Joss (alternately known as Wynyard Joss; Joss-Wynyard; Wynward Joss) was born in 1872 in Scotland, a son to Alexander McDonald Wynyard-Joss and Margaret Wynyard-joss (nee Nicoll). The family emigrated to New Zealand when he was still a child.
He was a talented professional musician (Mandolin) and amateur cyclist racing in New Zealand. He became manager of the Viking Cycle Company in Auckland selling Cleveland Cycles. In 1900 he was appointed as manager for the Cleveland Cycle Agency in Brisbane. He married Ena Muriel McGill on 20 Dec 1930 in Brisbane, Queensland, and they had 3 children. They purchased the heritage listed 'Wilston House' in Wilston, Brisbane, in 1927 where the family would reside up until his passing. He was awarded an O.B.E. for his services in WW1.
He served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1. First service was as a Lieutenant in the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War, establishing the first cyclist section. Second service was as a Lieutenant rising to Major in the 301 Mechanical Transport, 8th Army Services Corps, AIF, WW1.
