Add my storyBiography contributed by Claude McKelvey
George Alfred Keary was born on 1 Jul 1853 at the farming estate of Hlokham, Norfolf, England, a son to Hall William Keary and Helen D'Urban Keary (nee Rodwell). His father was the manager of the property owned by the Earl of Leicester.
He came to Queensland in his teens working initially on a cattle property at Logan, Queensland, prior to pursuing droving and grazier roles in other areas of the state. He married Flora Henrietta McQuarie McDonald on 5 Jan 1882 in Queensland and they had 2 sons, eventually settling at Boonah near Ipswich.
He served as a Lieutenant, Special Service Officer- Transport, with the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen in the South African (Boer) War. When peace was declared he remained in the Transvaal as a Superintendant of Depots and Stock Farms for the Imperial Repatriation Department returning to Queensland in 1905. Both his sons served in WW1 with his eldest K.I.A. in France and youngest badly wounded in Palestine.
