Major Kellie served in the 3rd Contingent, as an officer commanding 'D Company'. Sailed to South Africa on 1st March 1900 on the ship Portland. He took part in battles such as the Battle of Elands River and the Relief of Mafeking. He previously served in the Afgan War in 1880 and the Soudan during 1884-85.

Major C. W. Kellie, who took part in three active service campaigns, died recently, at the home of his daughter, Mrs H. Ciemer of Ryde. Major Kellie served with the Royal Artillery in India, and took part in the Afghan campaign of 1880. Subsequently, he participated in the engagements of El Teb and Tamai in Egypt. He was awarded a number of decorations. Later he commanded a company of Queenslanders who took part in the relief of Mafeking." - from the Sydney Morning Herald 19 Sep 1939 (nla.gov.au)
