Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

James Leishman was born about 1876 at Glasgow, Scotland, a son to William Leishman and Margaret Leishman (nee McIntyre). The family relocated to Mount Usher near Rockhampton by the time he enlisted in 1900 for the South African (Boer) War. At the time of his enlistment for WW1 in 1915 he noted on his Attestation Paper that he was married to Florence Leishman, with his funeral notice in 1951 noting they had one child.

He served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1. First service was as a Private S.N. 288 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. Second service was as a Lieutenant in the 4th Pioneer Battalion AIF, WW1.
