Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Richard 'Dick' Lun was born on 19 March 1871 at Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, a son to John Lunn and Charlotte Lunn (nee Theaker). At the age of 12 he emigrated with his parents to the Maroochy area of Queensland, Australia eventually settling at Nambour where his father became a engineer and then manager at the Nambour sugar mill.

He began a career as a sailor on small ships sailing between Maroochy and Brisbane before at the age of 19 joining the merchant marine and travelling the world for 10 years. he left sailing in 1899 at last port of call, Cairns, and found his way to Mossman, Qld., where he would reside for the rest of his life. He was working on sugar plantations prior to becomming the first person from Mossman to enlist in any war when he enlisted for the South African (Boer) War.

Following his war service he returned to Mossman and purchased a cane farm in 1902 at Bamboo Creek outside of Mossman. He married Pollie 'Dolly' Hobson on 19 Jul 1906 and they would have two children. They later moved into the town of Mossman and took over the Post Office Hotel. He built and ran Mossman's first picture theatre and later went into the motor garage business. He was a foundation member of the Mossman Sub-branch of the R.S.L. formed in 1918.
