He enlisted for service in the Boer War and was part of the Third Queensland Contingent. During his service he was promoted from Private and eventually left as Company Sergeant-Major (Australian War Memorial).
He died at his home on Brisbane's south side, on 29 May 1910.
OBITUARY:
Mr. Thomas Mabbutt, an old resident, died last Sunday at his home, Avondale
avenue, Ipswich-road Junction, at the age of 50 years. The deceased, who leaves a widow and two children, arrived in Queensland in 1887, and from that time
took a great interest in the Queensland defence force. He went to South Africa
during the Boer War with the third contingent, and was at Elands Kiver, Rho-
desia, and the relief of Mafeking. On his return he maintained his interests in
military matters until he took over the position of foreman fitter with Ruthning's
stove works some five years ago. The funeral took place on Monday at the
South Brisbane Cemetery. Out of respect for the deceased, Ruthning's stove works were closed, and employer and employees followed the remains to their last resting place.
