VETERAN VETERINARIAN
GIVING GAME AWAY
Boer War veteran, ex-chief of theBalaklava Caledonian Society, ex-secretary and ex-president of the Balaklava and Dalkey Agricultural Society, member of the Balaklava R.S.L. sub-branch, president of the Balaklava Institute Committee, and a Justice of the Peace, Mr. Duncan McArthur has for over a quarter of a century filled a multitude of public positions in Balaklava, but perhaps he is best known as a veterinary surgeon who has faithfully served this district for 26 of his 33 years' practice in this profession. First in a car of ancient vintage and doubt ful ancestry, then in model T Ford, then in an Overland Whippet, later in a Hillman Minx, and latterly in a Morris saloon, "Mac" has been a familiar sight to most district residents as he sped around the country-side in all weathers, day or night, to at tend at some equine confinement, diagnose some dog's disease, see to
some sick swine, save some staggering sheep, cure some colicky cow, or — O.K., you dream up the next one !
Suffice it is to say that "Mac" has seldom failed in all these years to answer a call to aid a suffering beast, and were it possibly to express in pounds, shillings and pence the value of the stock he has saved in that time, no doubt a truly surprising, figure would result. Now Mr. McArthur has decided to abandon the calling he has followed so long, and as surgeon of the Balaklava Veterinary Lodge, he has called a meeting of members for December 13 (see advt.) to deal with his resignation, which will take effect from December 31 next. We understand that Mr. McArthur' has arranged for his place to be filled by another able man, with over twenty years of veterinary work be hind him, about half of this time be ing spent at Cummins, on the West Coast. The new surgeon is Mr. J, Bergman, now of Gawler. We understand that Mr. Bergman is a married man with three children.
Although his looks belie his age, Mr. McArthur is getting up in years, and no one will blame him for his decision to have a real spell at last. A keen and capable bowler, "Mac"' is doubtless looking forward' to the time when he will really be able togive the game his undivided attention. At present, however, there is no suggestion of his leaving Balaklava to reside elsewhere — we have to add this, or hordes of desperate - house hunters will be decending on the McArthur menage!
